Document Shredding and Information Security

I have the unique experience of being one of a few board certified security professionals who has direct operational experience in the document shredding industry.

I understand the equipment, processes, and practices necessary for document shredding vendors to operate, while also providing a true security service to customers. I also understand the profit potential and motivations, and recycling issues which drive many document shredding vendors to shortcut true security best practices.

I have a strong opinion that the paper recycling and waste management industry is too influential in dictating security standards to the security industry. Businesses that use document shredding contractors may be misled by membership fee supported “trade associations” and meaningless certifications. I believe that companies must be vigilant against the mirage of security that is presented by many document shredding contractors.

As an independent consultant, I have no bias toward destruction equipment, document shredding services, or recycling processes. I can work with management, fraud investigators, and attorneys to determine if best practices are observed by document shredding contractors. A written report of investigation and supplemental photos may be provided to support litigation or contractual issues.

Likewise, I can help the independent document shredding contractor to develop the best security and business practices necessary to gain profits and avoid liability. Many businesses contract with a document shredding vendor under the false assumption that they are cleared from liability and responsibility toward customer privacy. In the event that a breach of security is alleged against the document shredding contractor, I can assist in the defense or mitigation of the litigation, based on proven security practices.

I can assist businesses with the development of a document shredding contract proposal (RFP). I can also assist independent document shredding contractors to develop proposals in response to an RFP.

Lastly, I can develop in-house document destruction and information security programs for businesses whose standard excludes the use of vendors or the outsourcing of document shredding contractors.
